Le Bal d’Artemis Act II
— London
2017

Le Bal d’Artemis Act II explores the discourse of hysteria and brings together video, poetry, sculpture and installation by French artist Liam Sy Paquemar.

Sublimating the emotional and psychological state of hysteria as a scope for creativity and not as a mere pathology, Liam Sy Paquemar endeavours to redefine the hysterical. In doing so, he refers to goddess Artemis and to the etymological roots of the word “hysteria”, which is derived from the Greek ὐστέρα meaning matrix or uterus.

Le Bal d’Artemis Act II, in which the spectator vacillates between a Hellenic or post-apocalyptic understanding, is a hunt for fresh beliefs and experiences alien to the archetypal. Oscillating between primitive symbolism, classicism and sci-fi, the exhibition reconsiders the aesthetic and visual codes of the female condition.
